Un-defunding the War: Liberals Fail to Undermine the Troops

Today the House passed a $33 billion funding bill for our troops in Afghanistan. More than a third of House Democrats voted against it.

The controlling liberals in the Democratic Party—the ones who ruined the Party—have, since the beginning of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, publically declared their support for the young men and women who serve in our military, while denouncing the wars they are fighting.

They did it in Vietnam.

By the end, that war was a stellar, if exhaustingly long, success. By 1971, one could travel from one end of South Vietnam to the other, virtually unmolested by the enemy. This was due largely to General Creighton Abrams’ “clear-and-hold strategy.” Of course the Democrats fought him tooth and nail. But between early 1969 and June of 1972, Abrams sent 500,000 American servicemen home, reducing troop-strength from over one half million to under 50,000. Bet you thought we lost in Vietnam.

Yet Congress defunded the war, and with the help of the U.S. press, turned it into a humiliating defeat.

I have been vocal against the U.S. strategy in the Middle East. We cannot win the Afghanistan War. At best we may stabilize the region for a short time and perhaps run the Taliban and al Qaeda into Yemen and Pakistan.

General David Petraeus is a brilliant battlefield commander and he has created a counterinsurgency strategy that would undoubtedly work in any other war at any other time with any other enemy. It is a work of genius developed from his Princeton doctoral dissertation: “The American Military and the Lessons of Vietnam: A Study of Military Influence and the Use of Force in the Post-Vietnam Era.”

But it will not work against an enemy steeped in a barbaric 7th century Muslim ideology. Muslims are not Chinese communists.

Christians and Jews are the historic enemies of large factions within the Muslim religion. These are not, as some will have you believe, a few groups of errant thugs that “hijacked” a religion; more than 110 million Muslims worldwide practice Sharia law. There are dozens of Sharia courts in Great Britain today. Muslim groups in the U.S. are trying to establish them here.

None of this means, however, that we should cut and run from the field of battle, without inflicting serious damage on this enemy. Our young servicemen and women must come home knowing that their service has not been in vain.

What it does mean is that General Petraeus should reevaluate his strategy.

War must be brutal and unrelenting and quick. In the four short years—although it must have seemed an eternity—of WWII, U.S. troops defeated a worldwide enemy so formidable that it exterminated nine million people as though it were a pastime. The defeat was decisive and thorough, carried out on every continent on earth.

We destroyed our enemy. George C. Marshal and Douglas MacArthur realized that the time for nation building was after we had accomplished that mission.

The U.S. Army should incinerate Afghan poppy fields now. America should never support a Narco nation, not matter how poor or ignorant. There will be time to help them later. Next we should go on the offensive against any sign of collaboration with our enemy by the Afghan people. If anything moves against us we should kill it.

This is how wars are won, and there is no precedent for winning any other way.
