Hasan: A Jihadist Conspiracy?

In The Enemy Among Us on 13/11/2009 at 00:04

Today Obama ordered America intelligence agencies to bring him everything they have on terrorist shooter Nidal Malik Hasan. What prompted the President’s belated interest in a garden variety shooting by an Army Major “stressed” by the toils of holding down a desk at Walter Reed?

Could it be Hasan’s connection to radical American-born imam Anwar al-Awlaki? In a live press conference today, spokesman for the Army’s Criminal Investigation Command, Chris Grey, announced charges against the 39-year-old major and made one puzzling point. He said that Hasan was the only shooter “at the scene.”

Didn’t we know that? Why did Grey seemingly go out of his way to clearify the obvious? Better question: How long have U.S. intelligence agencies been sitting on intelligence on the man who perpetrated the first enemy attack on American soil since 9-11? Why did Grey stress “at the scene” when stating the Major Hasan was the only shooter?

Was Hasan under orders? Was he part of a larger plot? In Obama’s rush to quash any sense that the killer perpetrated a terrorist attack, did he miss the possibility that his own intellence services might have been onto what they thought was a wider conspiracy?

Something’s very wrong here. At a minimum our military is broken. Is Obama’s seeming inability to grasp that we are a nation at war compounded by a pre-9-11-type intelligence breakdown, as well?
