President Obama made a 22-minute appearance on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart Wednesday night. Well, that went well, don’t you think?
I don’t think I’ve seen anything so pathetic since Captain Queeg went into his strawberries rant in the Caine Mutiny.
“Ahh, but health care that’s … that’s where I had them. They laughed at me and made jokes but I proved … with … geometric logic …” I expected Stewart to break into a chorus of the “Yellowstain Blues” at any moment.
Perhaps, Mr. President—I mean, when you get around to doing damage assessment—you might want to reassign the aide who gave you this idea to watch duty over Sarah Palin’s kitchen in Wasilla. I understand that Joe McGinniss is subletting cheap.
In my lifetime I don’t believe I have seen anything more humiliating with a U.S. president than Barack Obama’s lack of understanding of the American public. It is argument number one that not only was he not born here, but that he arrived on a spaceship a year before the 2008 election. I’ve just become a birther.
Is there not a hole this guy can crawl into? Jon Stewart has to be the most clueless second-rate comedian on the planet and even he made the President look stupid. But, in fairness to Stewart, he made Brian Williams look like the Washington president of Obama’s fan club.
The White House is spin, spin, spinning this morning: “There’s a lot of different channels for people to watch these days,” press secretary Robert Gibbs said Tuesday. “They get their information from not just television news and cable and newspapers and radio and the Internet. … And the president hasn’t been shy about going to the places where people are getting their information and trying to make his case.”
What’s next, Robert? The Perez Hilton blog?
Here are a few of the Thursday morning comments:
Steve Doocy of Fox and Friends: “It looks like the president is enchanted with ‘The Daily Show,’ because he became the first president in history to go to a fake news show.”
Alex Eicler of the Atlantic Wire is playing it off like just another day at the office: “On Wednesday, President Obama appeared on The Daily Show, his first time on the program since winning the election in 2008.” His first time? Somebody clue in Mr. Eicler: Jon Stewart is not a real news anchor.
I liked this one from Joshua Greeman at the Daily News: “Obama has made far too many popular culture media appearances. He’s played the role of First Lady too much and the role of chief executive too little.” Ya think?
But a guy named Todd Robertson at the Dallas Morning News gets the Clueless Journalist of the Year Award. Robertson segues into Stewart’s popularity thusly: “What remains to be seen is the effect that the Stewart/Colbert rallies will have on the non-Republican mood in America.” Notify Homeland Security! Mobs are in the streets lynching Republicans!
What we are watching here is the decline of a presidency no less mollifying than Nixon-Watergate. Obama has not only misjudged the electorate, but his advisors have dug him into a hole that he cannot climb his way out of.
What do you want to bet Barack will be running Murder at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue tonight?
